The Hyundai's subcompact crossover, previously known as B-SUV, received the Kona name. By tradition of the brand SUVs denomination, the name is associated with one of the popular tourist destinations. In this particular case, it is a district on the Big Island of Hawaii in the State of Hawaii, well known among fans of surfing, water skiing and diving. In addition, one of the world's most expensive varieties of coffee grows there, and it's also called Kona. The word itself comes from the ancient Hawaiian language.
Unofficially Kona uses a platform from the i20 hatchback, but it has been updated. An all-wheel drive is possible here. The engines will be borrowed not only from the i20 but also from the older i30 family. Based upon the spy shots and the first teaser, the audience will find a certain sameness with the appearance of the Intrado concept of 2014 in the design of the subcompact. The company did not specify the date of the premiere of the production car but noted that it will come into the market in the summer of this year. This means that the best venue for a debut is an exhibition in New York.
Note that recently, automakers have stepped up in the class of subcompact SUVs. Well, we can remember the MG ZS which has been shown already and the forthcoming Volkswagen T-Roc and Seat Arona. And indeed, Hyundai has already caught the interest of the public with its Carlino concept. However, the car was intended to sound the Indian market. Alternatively to the Carlino, the Kona promises to be a fancy and streamlined car. By the way, Kia is also preparing to extend a line of SUVs thanks to the Stonic compact. Apparently, it will be much like Kona, but there is too little information on that score.
