Tesla and Panasonic started production of all-new batteries.

We are talking about the cylindrical cells “2170”, which will be used in a wide lineup of Tesla products. At first, "Gigafactory" will produce cells wich will be used for household and industrial batteries of Tesla's “Powerwall 2” and “Powerpack 2”. The first batteries for Tesla's Model 3 should appear in the second quarter of this year.

According to Tesla Motors, the factory will deliver lithium-ion battery cells as early as next year. Their integral capacity will be 35 gigawatt-hours (this is higher than the index of world's overall production of lithium-ion batteries in 2013), which will be enough for the manufacture of battery packs for 500 thousand of Model 3 electric vehicles. After reaching full production, which is planned for 2020, the facility will annually produce batteries of 150 gigawatt-hours, which will be enough for the production of more than 1.5 million electric vehicles.

Recall that the grand opening of the factory took place in July of last year. However, its completion is still a long way off. Nevertheless, Tesla says that eventually, Gigafactory will employ 6500 experts from the different fields and between 20 and 30 thousand of jobs will be created in the "surrounding regions".
