Toyota has officially presented the Yaris rally hatchback. In addition to this new car, the team of the Japanese brand will return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) after a 17-year absence.
The new hot hatch is equipped with a 1.6-liter supercharged engine, developing 380 horsepower and 425 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed transmission. The data on the dynamics of acceleration isn't provided. The maximum speed of the Toyota Yaris is 125 mph.
In addition, the Japanese called the pilots for the new season of WRC. The first Yaris will be driven by Juho Hänninen and his steersman Kaj Lindstrom, while the second car will go to Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila. A debut of the team will be held on January 19 at the Monte Carlo Rally. In spring Toyota will prepare the third car, which will be driven by Esapekki Lappi and Janne Farm.
Toyota announced its return to the World Rally Championship at the beginning of 2015 and in autumn of 2016, the Japanese showed for the first time a prototype of the new Yaris. Microsoft has become a technical partner of the team. Tommi Makinen was appointed a head of the team, he is a four-time champion of WRC.
The teams of Hyundai and Citroen have already presented the cars, produced according to the new rules of WRC.
