Today electric vehicles are used for a variety of purposes. The use of such transport in cities will allow avoiding atmospheric emission of pollutants. Thus, recently many companies are engaged in the development of new electric vehicles, capable to replace the cars, running on the internal combustion engines. It will be recalled that some days ago Mercedes company announced an electric truck, the characteristics of which are similar to an electric van of the Volkswagen group.
Thus far, the e-Crafter electrovan, presented at the International Automobile Exhibition, is only a concept, but the company promises to launch the car by the end of 2017. The vehicle is equipped with a 100 kW electric motor, providing 213 pound-feet of torque. 43kWh lithium-ion batteries provide range more than 124 miles. It is more than enough. Thanks to quick charger it’s possible to recharge battery in 45 minutes (up to 80%). The top speed of the car is limited to 50 mph, as the car is designed only for city deliveries.
The unladen weight of the e-Crafter is 5535 lbs, and the maximum payload - 3,768 lbs. Van e-Crafter van has 11.3 cubic meters of cargo space.
Externally the e-Crafter differs from its diesel “brothers” in effective, C-shaped LED running lights which identify the car with other Volkswagen electric vehicles. The model is colored with blue metallic (Reef Blue Metallic). The president of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Eckhard Scholz has noted that the e-Crafter elektrovan is designed specially for eco-friendly areas in city centers. In the future these vehicles will become an integral part of the door-to-door delivery, even where the movement of vehicles with internal combustion engines is prohibited.
With the new Crafter delivery van, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles division will further strengthen its positions in the market of light commercial vehicles in Europe. Following the results of sales for the first 8 months of 2016, the company has realized 228,500 vehicles in this class. Over 81,000 cars have been sold in Germany only.
