The advantages of their application in the automotive industry are obvious. If it is an electric vehicle like hybrids, then such a permanently functioning part like the headlight should be energy efficient to the maximum, in order not to consume some of the electricity from the driving system.
In budget cars, they very often have come to be used as not the main source of light but as the auxiliary - like running lights. Even models like Solaris, Rio, and Rapid can already be equipped with such lights at extra cost.
But LED headlights have also quite a bit drawbacks. Even the owners of premium cars often complain about the failure of such complex equipment. The main disadvantage from viewpoint of the owners is almost complete unrepairability. It is impossible to replace the LEDs. The box of a headlight is often made integral, to complicate the procedure of individual home-made repair as much as possible.
But the LED lighting has also the other positive side. The automakers have a completely logical reason to set up non-serviceable lamps and lights in their cars, and this reason is the serviceable life of the light-emitting diodes. The lifespan of LEDs ranges from 25 thousand to 50 thousand hours, which is an undeniable advantage over halogen lamps that rarely last longer than 500 hours and xenon lamps with their lifespan up to 2,5 thousand hours.
But yes, if they burn out or go down for no apparent reason, then most often it is necessary to buy the complete headlight assembly. Also, the lighting control unit, which is responsible for the correct operation of the LED headlights, might also break down.
Plates may burn out for many reasons, but the main one is overheating problem. The fact is that cars require a good action radius of headlights, so the very powerful light-emitting diodes are used in headlights. They get hot way more than household lamps with a power of 7-10 W and a light flux of several hundred lumens. It is just a poor design of the cooling system of the plates leads to the fact that both individual diodes and the whole headlight can stop working. Anyway, this leads to the purchase of a new headlight assembly.
Another significant drawback is low visibility in bad weather conditions. This is more relevant to the tail lights, the LEDs in which do not get hot as in the front clusters due to low power. You can often notice how on a snowy day the rear clusters are covered with snow, which does not melt on them.
